At The Township Senior Living, we are always excited to celebrate the Back-to-School season! Partnering with local schools is typically a year-long effort, but there is a special focus on the time when most students are heading back to the classroom- whether in person or virtually. We have partnered with McBride Elementary. Our residents find it easy to relate to school outreach efforts as many of them can recall a time when they returned to school as well.
Fostering these relationships helps build a sense of community among students, teachers, residents, and staff. There are plenty of advantages to intergenerational activities- such as decreasing the social and economic isolation so many seniors feel. Research has shown that seniors’ health, memory, and balance can benefit from volunteering regularly with children. Not only do these relationships benefit the older generations, but also the younger ones as well. Studies have also shown that children who interact with elders are less likely than others to start illegal drug use, will more likely have improved communication with their parents, and are less likely to experience depression. Lastly, these experiences can create timeless memories for both the seniors and children involved, such as making a new friend, trying a new game or activity, or listening to stories of each other’s life.
McBride Elementary is very close to our community and one of our residents has a grandchild that attends this school. Last year we adopted a kindergarten class and worked with a teacher's wish list. Our residents got a list, and we went shopping for all the things our teacher wished for. This year we have adopted a fourth-grade class and we are working on the supply list from the school. We also delivered treats for the teachers last school season and will be making treats for them on the first day of school.
The classroom benefits by having all the necessary supplies for the classroom. This is so beneficial for the teacher, so they don't have to spend from their personal budget. The teacher has the ability, with the donations, to provide for children who can't afford the supplies or forgot their supplies.
Our school list can be found on Springfield Public School website. If you would like to donate you can drop it off at our community’s front desk.
We are also partnering with Republic High School for the first day of class, August 22, 2022. We are going to be at the front entrance providing breakfast muffins, juice, protein breakfast bars, and lots of encouragement from our residents. We have several residents that have taught at or attended Republic schools.
The Township Senior Living will continue to show their support in a lot of different ways this Back-to-School season and throughout the school year.
